Join ELi in Brainstorming How the City of East Lansing Might Save Money

Have you had ideas about how the City of East Lansing might save money or increase revenues? If so – or if you want to hear other folks’ ideas – join us on Monday, April 19, at 7 p.m. via Zoom to discuss the possibilities.

On Tuesday, April 13, City Council held its first public budget workshop, which Alice Dreger will soon be reporting on. It will hold at least two more on April 20 and 27, both on Tuesdays at 5 p.m.

With budget season upon us, ELi hopes this workshop will provide a platform for residents to express their ideas, concerns, and solutions regarding City finances.

Anne Hill, who serves on ELi’s Community Advisory Board, developed the idea with Alice after following City financial discussions. Anne thought the City could save money by pursuing partnerships and untapped resources within the community. For example, both the City and the MSU Broad Art Museum offer art classes; how might they work together? Might there be ways to manage employment offers to reduce expenses?

Even though the City expects to receive up to $12.5 million in federal stimulus money, its financial future remains uncertain due to the pandemic. Fewer people going downtown has meant fewer people paying for parking. MSU employees working remotely could lead to decreased income tax revenues.

Our goal with Monday’s virtual get-together is ultimately to consider presenting the ideas discussed and formulated at our brainstorming session to City Council. So, we hope to hear from you.
